What is anorexia and what are some of the dangers? Anorexia is simply one of several eating disorders that is plaguing many of our young men and women. Over 7 million women and 1 million men struggle with anorexia nervosa within the United States alone. It is a disease that is truly indiscriminate, both men and women, rich and poor, young and old, and all minorities are affected by the disease. When anorexia is reported, 86% of those reports are given by people 20 years old and younger. Since anorexia and other eating disorders are so widespread, the best way to combat their spread is to promote public awareness. So, what are some of the signs someone is struggling with an eating disorder?...
Copyright 2006 Anne Wolski In a world where a person's worth tends to be measured by appearance, it is little wonder that we have so many young women falling into the trap of eating disorders. This obsession with achieving the perfect figure has led to one of the most dangerous and life-threatening epidemics of our time. Bulimia is but one of a growing number of eating disorders recognized in our modern society. It is a serious disorder characterized by binge eating followed by forced vomiting or by purging using laxatives. People with bulimia go through this ritual in order to avoid the weight gain which would normally accompany an eating binge. Why people get this...
Eating Disorder sufferers are male and female alike. We are of all ethnicity's, religions, and economic backgrounds. We are of all ages, with very different body structures. We can look
normal on the outside and yet be suffering terribly on the inside.
Genetics, Psychology, and Media all influence the onset of an eating disorder. Once we get caught in the cycle, some days it seems as though we will never break free. We constantly beat ourselves up, every moment of every hour of every day. If we could just be perfect in some way then we would be ok. It is easier to stand alone, free from the rejection, and disappointment of others. In our loneliness we listen to the constant torment inside our heads.
You are stupid! You can’t do anything right! Why would anyone want to be your friend? You are so fat! No one ever is going to want you! Who would ever love you?
Every sufferer has her or his own negative voices. We try to out run them in anyway we can.We, so badly, want to be in control of our lives. Our Eating Disorder is the one thing we have control over, or so it seems. After some time, even our eating disorder becomes out of control. We may become depressed, defensive, angry, hopeless, self harming and some of us may become suicidal.
So, we isolate ourselves, blocked off from the world. One more lap, onemore sit up, one more pound, and yet that one more is never enough. We weigh ourselves over and over and over again, thinking that the numbers will change.
We stop eating, constantly overeat, binge,or cut. We use laxatives, enemas, drugs, and alcohol. We lock ourselves in the bathroom to purge, and we exercise, exercise, and yet still
exercise. THERE IS HELP! THERE IS HOPE!DO NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.

Patients suffering from eating disorders binge on food and sometimes are both anorectic and bulimic. This is an impulsive behaviour as defined by the DSM (particularly in the case of BPD and to a lesser extent of Cluster B disorders in general). Some patients develop these disorders as a way to self-mutilate. It is a convergence of two pathological behaviours: self-mutilation and an impulsive (rather, compulsive or ritualistic) behaviour. The key to improving the mental state of patients with dual diagnosis (a personality disorder plus an eating disorder) lies in concentrating upon their eating and sleeping disorders. By controlling their eating disorders, patients assert control over their lives. This is bound to reduce their depression (even eliminate it altogether as a constant feature of their mental life). This is likely to ameliorate other facets of their personality disorders. Here is the chain: controlling one's eating disorders controlling one's life enhanced sense of self-worth, self-confidence, self-esteem a challenge, an interest, an enemy to subjugate a feeling of strength socialising feeling better. When a patient has a personality disorder and an eating disorder, the therapist should concentrate on the eating disorder. Personality disorders are intricate and intractable. They are rarely curable (though certain aspects, like OCD, or depression can be ameliorated with medication). Their treatment calls for the enormous, persistent and continuous investment of resources of every kind by everyone involved. From the patient's point of view, the treatment of her personality disorder is not an efficient allocation of scarce mental resources. Also personality disorders are not the real threat. If a patient with a personality disorder is cured of it but...
