Main Causes of Bulimia
Some people may feel that they are fat, no matter how thin they actually are. Or they may feel guilty when they eat too much food. The guilt and shame from eating makes the person vomit up all their food. These people have bulimia nervosa, or bulimia, an eating disorder. The disorder has nothing to do with the digestive system, but rather with the mind. And though people with bulimia may share the same guilt and shame about food, and the same patterns of bingeing and purging, bulimia has many causes. Doctors have not identified any one cause of bulimia, but do know of several factors that may contribute to developing bulimia. Bulimia may be caused by a genetic component. Certain genes may...

Eating Disorders: What are they?

Author:
Jeff Dedrick

Eating disorders are the diseases caused due to the abnormal eating behavior of an individual. Many people suffer from such eating disorders. They indulge in eating more and more food, which is considered abnormal. A normal person cannot have the amount of food, a person suffering from an eating disorder can have.

Such abnormal patterns of food are not a result of increased hunger. Person having eating disorders have other problems. These problems are related to their lifestyle. Eating disorders are a sign of a problematic time in a person’s life. People eat more food to suppress extreme emotions and depression.

There are also different types of eating disorders. Some types of eating disorders are: anorexia, compulsive eating, binge eating disorder and bulimia. These eating disorders are completely curable. You have to detect them on time and seek a medical advice. Treatment may take a long time. But if the patient is given good support by his family and friends, he can fully overcome the disease.

There are certain misconceptions about eating disorders. One common misconception is that the males who have any eating disorder are considered to be gay. The fact is that sex has nothing to do with eating disorders. Secondly, if a man has one eating disorder, he cannot have another. This is also false. Many people can have multiple eating disorders.

The most common misbelieve is that teenage girls are more prone to eating disorders. It is a fact that you can have an eating disorder during your teenage years but anyone, be it children, young girls, and boys, can develop an eating disorder.

If someone around you seems to be suffering with eating disorders, help them. Such people become emotionally very weak and use food as a way to relieve themselves. Emotional support is the most important thing to treat these individuals.

Bulimia - Dying For The Love Of Food
The German translation for bulimia is "Fresssucht", literally meaning "addiction to eating". Like all addictions, it has a devastating effect on the mind and body and needs to be managed through proper treatment. Though experts disagree on the statistics, it estimated that between 8% and 10% of the US population suffers from bulimia. 90% to 95% of these are women of all ages. 10% of the affected will die. It's not always easy to recognize if a person has bulimia. Unlike anorexics, bulimics are not always extremely thin. They don't avoid food, but rather enjoy it. It's the part of getting rid of a meal that makes this a devastating and possibly fatal disease. The most commonly known sign of bulimia is to induce vomiting following a meal. This can be after a regular meal or binge eating (eating a very large amount of food in one sitting). A binge-eating episode is usually triggered by stress or depression and can happen a few times a week. During the episode, the affected person will lose control over herself and her food consumption, then experiences a moment of calmness. For them, "comfort food" literally means that. It's the emotion that follows next that pushes the person to purge, guilt and self-loathing. Purging implies getting rid of the intake of food, very often by inducing vomiting, but also by excessive use of laxatives, enemas and/or diuretics. By these methods, bulimics try to get rid of the calories. Others symptoms of bulimia can be excessive exercising, strict dieting and occasionally, fasting. Since there usually are no physical signs (at least in the beginning), it can be very hard to see if a person has bulimia. But there are quite a few warning signs in bulimic's behavior that can give them away. They will very often go to the...
